Knowledge of the three-minute rule makes it easier to stop smoking
Although smoking is known to be associated with considerable health risks, millions of people in this country still regularly smoke. Quitting smoking is a particularly often heard resolution at the turn of the year. Expert tips help to make it a reality.

Smoking favors many serious illnesses
Smoking is dangerous for your health. Tobacco consumption favors twelve types of cancer such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer and colon cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD.

Around 20 million smokers in Germany
“According to the WHO, smoking is the greatest avoidable health risk. Tobacco consumption leads to health-related risks and complications that far exceed the consequences of using other addictive substances, ”writes the German Center for Addiction Issues (DHS) on tobacco addiction.

Nevertheless, around 20 million smokers still live in Germany. At the turn of the year, some will definitely decide to stay away from cigarettes in the future, but most of them find it very difficult to stop smoking.

Some believe that smokers need a firm will to get out of their addiction. Others say cold withdrawal is the best way to stop smoking.

In a message from the dpa news agency, an expert has tips on how to overcome addiction.

Greed for a cigarette is usually over after three minutes
"The greed for the cigarette only lasts about three minutes on average", Gabriele Bartsch from DHS told dpa. It is therefore important to bridge this time.

For example, the expert recommends turning on the radio and counting certain words, such as how often the moderator says the word "I" or "he". An arithmetic problem can also cause distraction: "Take the number 113 and calculate in steps of 7 backwards to zero."

Tips on stopping smoking
Bartsch has other advice at hand: smokers should look for a stress-free time to quit. If you have problems with your partner or at work, it is more difficult to do without cigarettes.

It also makes sense to inform friends and relatives and, if necessary, ask them not to smoke in their presence. Bartsch recommends stopping completely, because every additional cigarette stimulates the addiction memory anew.

Nicotine patches can make the transition easier, but they are not a permanent solution. "Nicotine patches keep the ex-smoker physically dependent," warns the expert.

According to scientific studies, e-cigarettes do not help smokers quit. (ad)
