In a current press release, the BZgA lists colorectal cancer as the second most common cancer in women and the third most common in men. The risk of getting sick increases with age. Colon cancer is often recognized too late because the disease does not cause any symptoms at an early stage. The BZgA advises regular early diagnosis examinations, because the earlier the disease is recognized, the greater the chances of recovery.

The immunological stool test

With the help of a stool test, which men and women from the age of 50 should take annually, it can be checked in the laboratory whether there is invisible blood in it. In April 2017, the immunological test was introduced for this purpose, which is considered to be more reliable than the chemical method previously used. If this test is positive, it can be an indication of colorectal cancer. Blood in the stool can also have other causes, such as hemorrhoids or an inflammation of the intestine.

If colon cancer is suspected, a colonoscopy is performed

After a positive stool test, a colonoscopy is usually done (colonoscopy). The intestine is examined from the inside to confirm the diagnosis. During the examination, an elastic tube is inserted into the intestine. There is a camera and a headlight on the head of the hose. If there are suspicious tumor precursors, the doctor can insert small instruments over the tube to take samples or cut and remove polyps. You don't have to be afraid of the examination. As a rule, a sedative or narcotic is given before the examination.

The health insurance companies finance early detection

According to the BZgA, both statutory and private health insurance companies offer colonoscopy as part of statutory colon cancer screening. This can be done twice as a prevention every ten years. The stool blood test is offered as an alternative and can be taken every two years from the age of 55.

The best prevention is a healthy lifestyle

In addition to the early detection examinations, a healthy lifestyle can help prevent colon cancer from developing at all. Too little exercise, obesity and tobacco and alcohol consumption are considered risk factors. But even with a healthy diet and as little alcohol as possible, colon cancer cannot be prevented with certainty. "It is therefore essential to also have a colonoscopy for the early detection of colon cancer," emphasizes Professor Dr. med. Alcohol and colon cancer

An analysis of 14 prospective cohort studies showed that the consumption of 100 grams of alcohol per week would be accompanied by a 15 percent increase in the risk of colorectal cancer. "If you regularly consume even more alcohol, the risk increases," says Trautwein.

Nuts can help with colorectal cancer

Stage III colorectal cancer patients can survive colorectal cancer thanks to nuts. This was demonstrated by scientists from the Yale Cancer Center and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in a recent study recently published in the "Journal of Clinical Oncology". The researchers found that people with stage III colon cancer who consume nuts regularly were significantly less likely to have cancer recurrence and mortality. (vb)
