Smart underwear could help many people with back pain
Many people around the world suffer from back pain. There are a number of products here that are said to enable successful treatment of back pain. However, there is usually no evidence of effectiveness or they are simply and simply unusable. However, researchers have now developed a new type of underwear that has been shown to help alleviate back pain.
The scientists at Vanderbilt University developed a mechanical, intelligent underwear that can relieve back pain. This powerful underwear is even flat enough to be worn under normal clothing. The doctors released a press release on the results of their study.
Treating back pain swallows a lot of money
Over half of all adults experience back pain at some point in their lives. In the U.S. alone, treating the back pain results in more than $ 30 billion in medical costs, the researchers said. In addition, the lost productivity will cost more than $ 100 billion, explains Erik Lamers, who was involved in the design of the underwear. As a child, the student repeatedly suffered from back pain. The new device will be presented in the United States on August 8 at the American Society of Biomechanics conference in Boulder, Colorado. Previously, it was presented at the Congress of the International Society of Biomechanics in Brisbane, Australia.
New underwear is supposed to relieve the back and protect against back pain
The scientists said they wanted to develop a piece of clothing that in a way resembles a superhero's suit. The difference is that the underwear is not suitable for combating crime, but instead relieves the back when lifting small children and thus prevents back pain, says Professor Karl Zelik.
How is the new underwear structured?
The new device consists of two different sections of nylon canvas, lycra, polyester and other materials for the chest and legs. These sections are connected by sturdy straps across the middle back. The device is designed so that users only wear it when they really need it. If the underwear is put on properly, it feels like normal clothing, the experts explain. There is also the possibility to control the underwear through an app. Users can use their smartphones to adjust the smart underwear wirelessly via Bluetooth.
Underwear reduces strain on the lower back extensors by 15 to 45 percent
Eight subjects tested the device to lift 25-pound and 55-pound weights, the scientists say. Then they held the weights in a 30, 60 and 90 degree position. With the help of motion capture technology, so-called force plates and electromyography, the team found that the special underwear reduced the strain on the lower back muscles by an average of 15 to 45 percent for each task.
In the future, the underwear could activate if there is a lot of stress on the back
The next goal of the research, for example, is that sensors are embedded in clothing and used to monitor stress and strain on the lower back. If the load gets too heavy, smart clothing could automatically activate itself, Zelik adds.
The underwear is said to prevent back pain
The focus of this new technology is not on treating existing back pain, but on preventing this pain by reducing stress and fatigue in the back muscles, explains Dr. Aaron Yang from Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Clothing particularly useful for people with certain professions
According to the researchers, the concepts for intelligent clothing could primarily be used by people who have jobs in which they have to stand for long periods of time or who put more strain on their backs in some other way. Smart clothes can help such people to prevent pain and muscle inflammation, adds Dr. Yang added. (as)
