What effects does green tea have on our memory and weight?
Nowadays, more and more people suffer from being overweight or obese. Another major problem in modern society is the widespread Alzheimer's disease. Doctors have long been looking for ways to help people with these problems. Researchers have now found that green tea can protect people from memory loss and the effects of a high-fat Western diet.

In their latest study, scientists at Northwest A&F University in China found that consuming green tea in people helps protect them from the effects of a high-fat Western diet and memory loss. The doctors published the results of their study in the journal "FASEB Journal".

Green tea molecule has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties
The experts from China have determined that the drink contains a molecule (EpiGalloCatechin-3-Gallat), which seems to have anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. This would mean that it actually protects against memory loss. Perhaps the molecule could even help against insulin resistance, one of the causes of type 2 diabetes, the experts speculate. The new study also looked at the effect of the molecule on a high-fat diet and a diet rich in fructose.

Green tea to fight obesity, insulin resistance and memory disorders?
Together with water, green tea is one of the most important beverages in the world and is grown in at least 30 different countries, explains Dr. Xuebo Liu from Northwest A&F University. So far, many experts have believed that green tea helps treat a number of human diseases. If people drink green tea on a regular basis, this could be an acceptable alternative to medicine to fight obesity, insulin resistance, and memory disorders, the author adds.

Signs of Alzheimer's
In the UK alone, more than 520,000 people suffer from Alzheimer's disease. There are some signs and symptoms of this condition that can be identified by friends and relatives of those affected:
- Changes in mood and personality: If people react slightly annoyed, confused, depressed or anxious, this can be a sign of Alzheimer's.
- Memory loss: One of the most common signs of Alzheimer's is memory loss, which begins to affect the everyday life of those affected.
- Difficulties in solving simple problems: For example, people with Alzheimer's often find it very difficult to cook a dish based on a recipe.
- Difficulties in daily work. People with Alzheimer's are often no longer able to do their job.
- The frequent misplacement of objects: We all forget where we put our key. However, if this happens more often, it could be a sign of Alzheimer's.
- Visual problems: A person with Alzheimer's can have difficulty assessing colors and distances. For this reason, it is difficult for those affected to drive or read books.
- Forgetting time and important data: Some people with Alzheimer's can even forget where they are and how they got there. Personal data can also be forgotten.

Taking EGCG improves memory test results
For the investigation, three groups of mice were medically monitored over a period of 16 weeks. The study showed that eating epigallocatechin gallate (the antioxidant makes up about a third of the dry weight of green tea) improves memory test results. Epigallocatechin gallate is also known as EGCG. So there really seems to be cognitive benefits from consuming EGCG. (as)
